What is Goljan Audio?

Dr. Goljan is a very well known pathology teacher in these parts. He used to teach for Kaplan, and now teaches for Falcon as of recently, as well as at an osteopathic school in Oklahoma.

Anyway, a few years ago someone recorded his lectures and now it can be found everywhere if you can do a good internet search for it. These audio lectures have been very helpful to folks because he teaches pathology in an intergrated fashion by tying it in to other subjects, like micro, bichem, pharm, etc. He also teaches in way that makes the information stick, and you learn and understand the concepts in a manner that you probably have not been taught before.

These lectures are copyrighted, so they are not available for sale on amazon, bn, etc. As I said before, with a good search you can locate them. There are a total of 37 lectures. There are also other materials from Goljan around, like pdf versions of his notes that were distributed to students in his class, also even his path slides that he refers to in his lectures along with his notes on them.

However, what is for sale, that you should be able to find on amazon, bn, etc. is his book titled Rapid Review Pathology. There are older versions available, but the newest one is quite good. It has a blue cover and is part of the Rapid Review Series. It contains alot of pictures, margin notes, blue boxes with clinical correlates, as well as lots of tables, charts, and diagrams. It follows the audio lectures pretty nicely, and many folks here have found this book to be very helpful. Goljan is also a co-author of Rapid Review Biochemistry, if you want to check that out as well.

Who is Goljan or What is Goljan?

Question: Who (or what) is Goljan and his (its) Pathology Lectures? I've listened to most of these (and love them), know little about pathophysiology, but can someone tell me who is this great man and what makes him "the best"?? He seems to be a favorite among medical students.

Joe> I say "what" and "is" because it seems like this guy has ascended to some sort of god among medical students, but I would love to know who he really is, find some sort of Bio., but Wikipedia and google have turned up surprisingly little.

Mark> Looks like he's Chief of Patholog at OSU. Have no idea what makes him so good since I've never heard his lectures (available on BitTorrent). I assume he's a good teacher.

Sam> His lecture notes are apparently very comprehensive but well organized, and his lectures are supposed to be very easy to follow. I think he actually holds a couple "Step 1 Review" series courses every year for 2nd year med students. I never used any of his stuff.

How do you use Goljan Audio lectures?

Quick question to all the people who are using Goljan Audio Lectures on Pathology?
How do you use them? Do you listen in your car while driving? Or maybe you listen to pathology lectures in your favourite Mp3 player?

Or maybe you prefer listening to Goldjan on your computer only?

Share your experience with Goljen lectures.

Rapid Review Pathology (Rapid Review) by Prof. Dr. Goljan

This text offers a comprehensive yet concise review of pathology while discussing all of the relevant clinical information. The review chapters in the first section of the text are in a user-friendly outline format with high-yield information located in margin notes and clinical topics discussed within the outline and in clinical boxes. The second section of the book contains two 50-questions exams in USMLE format. A CD-ROM that accompanies the book contains a full-color art program, 500 board-style questions and answers with rationales for correct answers as well as all incorrect choices, and a quizzing function that gives scores at the end of the exams.

Book reviews:
After reading BRS and most of Robbins, this remains the strongest resource. Concise for its subject, it covers the important aspects of path while digging for those little, annoying details and disorders that only show up on board exams. Goljan is a true pro at teaching this, with several years at Kaplan and Oklahoma Osteopathic, and he has constantly been grilling students for more information after they have taken their exam. Master this book, and you will not only do well in path, but also have a good foothold in other subjects like pharm, micro, and biochem due to Goljan's ability to integrate several fields into path. His work has continued to help me in third year rotations, as he also discusses diagnostic tests and treatments. The accompanying Q&A CD is unfortunately poorly made, but the quality of questions is very strong. I generally read Robbins or lecture material along with this text to lay a foundation for knowledge, but come test time, you want to cut the fat, and every word here is money. Try to get the accompanying audio CDs off Ebay for reinforcement. I largely credit Goljan's materials along with Robbins Review of Path (question book) for a 98 percentile on the path shelf and a 258 on Step I. This man may have taught me more academic medicine than anyone else. I truly hope you can benefit from this text as well.

Golljan

Goljan lectures are really great!
If you don't like goljan switch to BRS. Both books are great. The only thing important is to learn pathology.
